Impact of technology on Agriculture

Achievement in agriculture in the millennium will have gaped on the success in the integration with changes in technology advancement. These development have brought about a new level of scientific sophistication. Creating new opportunities to integrate smallholders in a digitally-driven agri-food system, blockchain, Artificial intelligence, the internet of things and immense realities are some of the so-called ‘fourth-generation industrial revolutions. In agri-food systems, the rapid spread of digital transformation, the spread of mobile technologies, and computer technology is changing the lives of many smallholder farmers.

Digital transformation has the potential to deliver significant economic, social, and environmental benefits. The following examples demonstrate how digital technologies can be applied to improve the efficiency and functioning of agrifood systems:

1.    Mobile telephony apps which provide market price information, farming advisory, and weather advice help farmers to properly plan for their production process.

2.    The use of robots in agricultural mechanization is a trend that will help farmers to calculate, map and rationalize water optimally in irrigation

3.    Use of Technologies in agriculture support farmers to prepare for pest attacks, crop failures, and changes in climate through timely weather-based agro-advisory messages;

4.    Internet of Things in the form of precision agriculture (PA) helps in saving costs during planting and fertilization.  Variable-rate technology and drones can also help reduce water, pesticides, and labor use cost. The use of remote sensing is revolutionalizing agriculture.

5.    The use of software such as ERP has high potential in streamlining every process i.e procurement, production, and distribution.

6.    Farmers may be able to scan their fields and monitor all the cycles of production by use of AI.

Adoption of agricultural technology by smallholder farmers is also relative to overcoming credit limitation, favorable policies, ownership status of the land. Change agents should be involved in all stages of change.
